World Scout Jamboree Presentation September 14, 2010
Dr. Chris Tashjian will be making a presentation at 7 PM on September 14th at the Council Office about the World Scout Jamboree (WSJ). The jamboree is July 27th to August 7th, 2011 in Rinkaby Sweden. All Scout and their parents are invited! Learn more.
Cub Adventure Camp October 2, 2010
The fun adventure of Cub Scouting begins in the outdoors. Meet some camp staff and tour the facilities where “outing” is put into Cub Scouting! Activities include archery, camp games, nature hikes, campfire cooking and more! Join us on Saturday, October 2, 2010 from 11 AM to 4 PM. Free Admission. Den Leader Training from 3 PM to 5 PM. Turkey Ridge Encampment June 3-5, 2011
Camp the Weekend or do a day trip with "pioneers, traders, settlers, and the Native Americans" who bring our history to life. New Policy for Youth Protection Training Effective June 1st
Youth Safety is the No. 1 concern of the Boy Scouts of America. To increase awareness
of this societal problem and to create even great barriers to abuse than already exist today in Scouting, the Boy Scouts of America is implementing several important changes to further enhance its Youth Protection policies. These policies take effect June 1, 2010. Learn more.
Youth Deer Hunt Information and Application
The dates are set for the youth Deer Hunt at Gamehaven Scout Reservation. Sponsored by the Council and the MN DNR, youth hunters must have a Firearms Safety Certificate and must hunt with a parent or guardian. The dates for this years deer hunt are October 9th and 10th and October 23rd and 24th. Mandatory orientation is Sunday, October 3rd. Applications must be received by August 13th to be elgible. Ten Commandments Hike set for October 30, 2010

The Ten Commandments is a group of scouts and scouters hiking from one house of worship to another. This is a great interfaith, cross cultural experience. At each house of worship, the worship leader will introduce the faith, the worship area, speak about one of the commandments, followed by a question and answer session. The scout will then move on to the next house of worship. Learn more.

New District Executive
Gamehaven Council is pleased to announced that Chris Huston is now serving the Sugar Loaf District as their District Executive. Chris is an Eagle Scout from Troop 59. He also worked at Gamehaven Scout Reservation during the summers of 2003 – 2007. We are glad to have him on our staff and know he will serve Sugarloaf well. Council Wide Fall Camporee October 1-3, 2010 (updated 09/02/2010)
What could be better than having a Council Camporee during the anniversary year at a former Scout camp? The fall camporee will be a council wide event held at Hok Si La Campground in Lake City, MN, a former Scout camp. The focus of this camporee will be scout skills from years past, hence the theme of Fall Back into Scouting. Watch this website for additional information. Do A Good Turn - 100 Hours of Service
Do a good turn! Participate in Gamehaven Council’s 100 Hours of Service for the 100th anniversary. Each unit is encouraged to do at least 100 hours of service in 2010. Your unit is encouraged to kick-off their 100 hours during the week of February 7, 2010 – the week of the Boy Scouts anniversary.
- Please register your first project here.
- Please record and track your service hours here for the rest of the year.
There will be a ribbon for your unit flag available at the end of the year for any unit that makes the 100 hour mark.
IEEE eMeritbadges
The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) is working with the Boy Scouts of America has developed hands on electricity and electronics instructional material based on the merit badge requirements in preparation for the National Jamboree this summer. Our council has a volunteer that has been working with the IEEE on this project. Visit the IEEE website to learn more.
New Belt Loops, Pins and Merit Badges
As the Boy Scouts of America focuses on change and innovation, new belt loops, pins, and merit badges are being introduced this year. Some of the new topics are video games, skateboarding, Geocaching, and Scuba Diving. Learn more.

Youth Training Online
BSA has online training that is available for youth. One such course if Den Chief Training. Boy Scouts wishing to become den chiefs will want to take this online course as part of their training to become a den chief. There is Venturing Crew Orientation and many other worthwhile courses. Help for Cub Scout Leaders
The Boy Scouts of America website is a great source of extensive information on many Cub Scout leader topics. It also provides electronic copies of many of the forms that are used. A newer item on the menu is Fast Tracks, a new approach to Den meetings in which more of the advancement activities are done through the den as a way to help busy Cub Scout families. Check it all out at the Cub Scout section of the Boy Scout’s website. Note that there is a menu of very useful topics that runs down the left side of the page. Click on “Fast Tracks” for great ideas for Den meetings. Take some time to click around and become familiar with many of the forms, topics and ideas available through the site.
Eagle Scouts' College Scholarships
There are many college scholarships available to Eagle Scouts. The scholarships are available through the National Eagle Scout Association (NESA), civic organizations, foundations, and even directly from some colleges or universities. These provide good opportunities to get help in covering the cost of a great education.

If you have copies of the old paper applications, please be aware that OLD APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. You can access the application and learn more about the scholarships here.
There are many other scholarships available to Eagle Scouts. One link to a good scholarship list is maintained at Scouter.com, another is a list made by Cimarron Council and another is to Evansville University serving as an example of a college/university that has their own scholarships for Eagle Scouts.
