Scouting Values Breakfasts

To celebrate the impact Scouting has on our youth and communities, and help us kick off our fundraising activities for 2011, Scouting Values Breakfasts will be held in December in each of the three districts.  To learn more, select the district of the breakfast you are interested in:

Hiawatha District:  December 2, 2010  Doubletree Hotel in Rochester, MN

Sugar Loaf District:  December 7, 2010  Signature Visions Event Center in Winona, MN

Wakpaota District:  December 9, 2010  Owatonna Country Club in Owatonna, MN

Polar Cubs 2011

Merit Badge Fair  March 19, 2011

Set aside the date!!  Gamehaven Council's annual Merit Badge Fair will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2011 at Lourdes High School in Rochester.  The committee has started planning and is now gathering merit badge counselors and will accept additional help. Contact the committee if you are interested in helping out!

 

Primitive Biathlon February 19, 2011

Black Powder and Snow Shoes! Categories this year include Juniors (17 and under) and Youngsters (18yrs-84yrs).   Also enjoy our late saturday afternoon “Winter Walk”- Stroll this beautiful winter wonderland (with or without snowshoes) and shoot the course without challenging the clock.  Register before January 28th; fee increases after.   Learn more and register.   Contact Ranger Steve by email or call 507-951-3761.

 

Leading Cub Scouts in 2010

Scouts Want Adults Trained! (updated 09/15/2010)

Training dates have been set for Youth Protection, and Cub Scout Position Training

Youth Protection and Cub Scout Position Training will be offered on four different dates.  Learn more

BALOO Training, Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation, has been set for May 21, 2011. This one day course is designed to introduce new leaders and parents on how to prepare for pack overnights.  Registration deadline is May 16, 2011.  Learn more.

 

Turkey Ridge Encampment June 3-5, 2011

Camp the Weekend or do a day trip with "pioneers, traders, settlers, and the Native Americans" who bring our history to life.  Enjoy a day where Scouts can encounter, learn, and try many of the crafts and skills of yesteryear.  Boy Scouts can also take these skills and earn badges.  Learn more.   Early registration due May 20, 2011, fee increases after.  Registration Form.

 

Be A Scout Campaign

The new BeAScout campaign is ready for unit leaders to put their units on the map!  BeAScout helps parents and volunteers locate packs, troops, and crews nearest them and request information about Scouting opportunities in their area.   Webinars are being held for unit leaders.  Learn more.  Unit Leaders Guide.

New Policy for Youth Protection Training Effective June 1st

Youth Safety is the No. 1 concern of the Boy Scouts of America.  To increase awareness

of this societal problem and to create even great barriers to abuse than already exist today in Scouting, the Boy Scouts of America is implementing several important changes to further enhance its Youth Protection policies.  These policies take effect June 1, 2010Learn more.

Geocaching Merit Badge Requirements Released

Get in the Game!  BSA has released the final requirements for the Geocaching Merit Badge.

 

Do A Good Turn - 100 Hours of Service

Do a good turn! Participate in Gamehaven Council’s 100 Hours of Service for the 100th anniversary.  Each unit is encouraged to do at least 100 hours of service in 2010.  Your unit is encouraged to kick-off their 100 hours during the week of February 7, 2010 – the week of the Boy Scouts anniversary. 

There will be a ribbon for your unit flag available at the end of the year for any unit that makes the 100 hour mark.

 

IEEE eMeritbadges

The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) is working with the Boy Scouts of America has developed hands on electricity and electronics instructional material based on the merit badge requirements in preparation for the National Jamboree this summer.  Our council has a volunteer that has been working with the IEEE on this project.     Visit the IEEE website to learn more.

 

New Belt Loops, Pins and Merit Badges

As the Boy Scouts of America focuses on change and innovation, new belt loops, pins, and merit badges are being introduced this year.  Some of the new topics are video games, skateboarding, Geocaching, and Scuba Diving.  Learn more.

Scoutcasts are podcasts (an audio and or video file) that features helpful information for scouters, parents, and volunteers at all levels and on different topics.  Check out the scoutcasts here.

Youth Training Online

BSA has online training that is available for youth.  One such course if Den Chief Training.  Boy Scouts wishing to become den chiefs will want to take this online course as part of their training to become a den chief. There is Venturing Crew Orientation and many other worthwhile courses.  Check it out!!  Click here.

 

Eagle Scouts' College Scholarships

There are many college scholarships available to Eagle Scouts. The scholarships are available through the National Eagle Scout Association (NESA), civic organizations, foundations, and even directly from some colleges or universities. These provide good opportunities to get help in covering the cost of a great education.

If you have copies of the old paper applications, please be aware that OLD APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. You can access the application and learn more about the scholarships here.

There are many other scholarships available to Eagle Scouts. One link to a good scholarship list is maintained at Scouter.com, another is a list made by Cimarron Council and another is to Evansville University serving as an example of a college/university that has their own scholarships for Eagle Scouts.
