Training
The most important
training for Safe Scouting is our Youth Protection Training. If you
havent taken it yet, take it online.
Youth protection training
helps all adults who work with youth to:
- Recognize situations that
place a child at risk of abuse; how child abusers operate; and how to deter a child abuser
from entering the Boy Scouts
- React or respond to a child
who has been abused, and the type of abuse they may have fallen victim to
- Report a suspected case of
abuse using Scouting procedure and Minnesota law.
Much of our Safe Scouting
training is self-paced. E-mail or
telephone (507-287-1410 or 800-524-3907) the Council Office to borrow the videotapes or
DVDs you need. For example, if you will be taking your unit on a swimming activity,
at least one adult leader must complete Safe Swim Defense training. Borrow the video
and become trained!
Specific training that is
available include
- Climb on Safely
- This is the Boy Scouts
recommended procedure for conducting climbing and rappelling at a natural site, or at a
specifically-designed facility, such as a climbing wall or a tower.
- Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat
- Every unit needs a
qualified, trained person at least 21 years old to supervise aquatic activities.
These two courses helps unit leaders understand the procedures for Boy Scout aquatic
activities, and the role leaders play in providing fun and safe events.
Recertification is required every two years.
